Future Food Product Ideas

Kerson Fruit or "Mansanitas"

I remember when I was young, I used to eat this fruit simply because it is sweet and its free to eat. Kerson Fruit is a fast growing tree that has a cherry like fruit and taste. The Kerson cherry contains many powerful antibacterial compounds, with multiple health benefits. I decided to make this fruit into a wine to make it more tastier and can be enjoyed even from those countries that are not abundant with Kerson Fruit.

"MANSANITAS WINE"

I call this the "Mansanitas Wine". The process would still be the same on how wine makers produce a wine it's just that instead of using grapes I am using the Kerson Fruit or "Mansanitas".

Here are the health benefits of the fruit:

1. Cardiovascular Protection – The leaves made into tea protect the heart from heart attacks, because the leaves contain antioxidants that prevent inflammation which leads to myocardial infarction.

2. Antibacterial compounds–The Kerson cherry contains many powerful antibacterial compounds too, making it a new source of antibacterial agents
3. Anti-inflammatory – The leaves can be used as tea for treating inflammation and swelling and for lowering fevers.
4. Vitamin C – The fruit contains a good amount of Vitamin C a potent antioxidant that helps to fight off colds and flues.
5. Lowers Blood Pressure – Tea made of the leaves lowers blood pressure because it contains nitric oxide which relaxes blood vessels thus improving blood flow.
6. Headaches –Munching on the fruit and drinking tea made of the leaves works great for curing headaches.
7. Abdominal cramps– The flowers of the tree boiled for tea are a good antiseptic agent and also work well for treating abdominal cramps.
8. Pain Blocker – Kerson leaves made into tea are great for pain because they block pain receptors, a good antinociceptive agent similar to opiates.
9. Antioxidants–The leaves contain antioxidants, made into tea protect the heart from heart attacks, because it prevents inflammation which leads to myocardial infarction.
10. Vitamins and minerals –Other than fiber, Kerson Fruit has a lot of vitamins and minerals like carbs, protein, calcium and phosphorus for strong bones, water, iron for anemia and B-Vitamins for vitality and good mood.

Jack Fruit or "Langka"

The jack fruit is a widely cultivated and popular food item throughout the tropical regions of the world. The flesh of the jack fruit is starchy and fibrous and is a source of dietary fiber. The flavor is comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple, mango, and banana. The seeds from ripe fruits are edible, are said to have a milky, sweet taste, and may be boiled, baked, or roasted. When roasted, the flavor of the seeds is comparable to chestnuts. Seeds are used as snacks either by boiling or fire roasting, or to make desserts. Ripe jack fruit is naturally sweet with subtle flavoring. It can be used to make a variety of dishes, including custards, cakes, sometimes seeded, fried, or freeze-dried and sold as jack fruit chips. Here is my idea for the future.

"JACK FRUIT OR LANGKA PASTE"

The idea that I have using the jack fruit as paste will be convenient for those countries that doesn't have jack fruit. It can also be added to breads, desserts and dishes. It comes in two flavors: the ripe and unripe jack fruit paste. I personally don't like to eat the unripe jack fruit most especially when it is added to dishes just like the "Kadyos" that I ate because I like to eat them raw. So my solution would be to make it into paste so that it can give a sweet and aromatic flavor to any food.

"Crispy Chicken Nails"

I don't originally own the idea on how this dish is made but I've got to say that I want to try it personally. Yes, you have heard it right this is made from chicken nails those sharp, pointed parts that usually end up in the thrash bin. You don’t need a graphic imagination to realize that feet are one of the dirtiest parts of the body—be it in chickens or humans. Yet, most of us won’t mind eating chicken feet either as "adobo or sinigang" or barbecued. For some people, however, the term waste not, want not also means that no part of the chicken, including its nails, is ignored. In fact, an episode of  "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" featured how to properly clean, prepare, and fry the breaded chicken nails. The taste test generated positive feedback so if you’re in the mood for experimentation, crispy chicken nails is definitely a must-try. I don't think this dish has a nutritional value but I bet its fun and exciting to eat. Who knows, maybe this will be commercially available someday.
